Words or Music: Why Choose? What to choose, the poet or the composer. Renée Fleming has a career and she has made very personal choices of opera roles. At the Met, the role suits her ideally at this stage of her career Andrew Davis his final opera, which had its premiere. It is her birthday, and for the occasion Flamand has written her a string sextet, and Olivier a sonnet. The love triangle becomes an allegory for an aesthetic debate about whether music or words are more important, when the two arts are combined. For the Countess, being courted by two artistic men is both flattering and threatening. There is no reason to choose between words and music. But between her two suitors she must make a choice. The opera is presented here, the baritone Russell Braun was appealing as Olivier. The most crucial character is La Roche, a theater director, here the powerful bass Peter Rose. In the final Strauss finally gives his audience a trademark. The Countess never really reveals her choice between words and music, the poet and the composer. The opera never resolves the question. Somehow this was the perfect way for Strauss to end his opera career. CAROLINA FORERO

Two New Orleans police officers convicted last year in the killing of a man during the chaos following Hurricane Katrina were sentenced Thursday in federal court. Former Officer David Warren got more than 25 years in prison, and current Officer Greg McRae was sentenced to more than 17 years, the Justice Department said. Prosecutors contended that Warren fired at Glover from the police station's balcony after he allegedly saw Glover heading toward the station with something in his hand. McRae had been found guilty of using a fire to commit a felony -- specifically, burning the Chevrolet Malibu with Glover's body inside. McRae burned the car near the police station where Glover was shot, prosecutors said. Earlier this month, a federal investigation found that the New Orleans Police Department has engaged in patterns of misconduct in violation of the Constitution and federal law, the Justice Department announced. Among the findings are that the police department has used excessive force, made unconstitutional stops and searches, and illegally profiled people based on race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. The investigation also found a number of practices that contributed to the illegal conduct, including failed systems for recruiting and promoting officers, poor training and lack of supervision, among others.

Microsoft plans to file a formal complaint with the European Commission Thursday, accusing Google of abusing its position as the region's dominant search engine. Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) cited several examples of what it said was Google's abuse of its dominant position. For instance, the company claims that Google is impeding fair competition by restricting rival search engines from "properly accessing" the Google-owned YouTube for their search results. Google supposedly won't release YouTube's so-called "metadata," which includes video categories, favorites and ratings. Microsoft said it wants to release its own high-quality YouTube app, but it requires access to YouTube's metadata to do that. "[Google] understands as well as anyone that search engines depend upon the openness of the Web in order to function properly, and it's quick to complain when others undermine this," the company said in its blog. Both companies compete in the online advertising market, and Microsoft said that Google prevents advertisers from easily porting their ad campaign data to competing platforms, including Microsoft's adCenter. Microsoft also cited Google's dominant position in websites' search boxes. And Microsoft joined in a chorus of companies that want more transparency in how Google ranks its advertisements. Microsoft's voice is by far the largest among those opposed to Google's position -- though a Google spokesman noted that Microsoft's complaint comes as no surprise, since Ciao, a Bing subsidiary, was one of the original complainants. Google controls 65% of the search market in the United States but 90% of the market in Europe, which is why Microsoft said it filed the complaint there. More so than most, we recognize the importance of ensuring that competition laws remain balanced and that technology innovation moves forward.

Japanese people are still waiting for the bodies of their relatives; tsunami and earthquake victims. There are 4,760 people missing in Fukushima. The police are still looking and are unaware of bodies in the streets, and say that the number of bodies that could be indoors is low. Media reports say they may not be recovered because of radiation in the evacuation zone. A grim possibility would be that bodies may be lying inside the evacuation zone and may not be recovered. “Bodies can absorb radiation much like any other object” said Dr. Wally Curran, “Proper handling of the bodies would depend on their levels of radioactivity, and would have to be assessed by those on the ground. Will Total Toothpaste Go Triclosan Free? Triclosan is rapidly becoming the BPA of the consumer product world -- troublesome and best avoided. Just as some companies have reformulated their cans and water bottles get rid of the endocrine-disrupting BPA, others are beginning to phase out triclosan, a widely-used antimicrobial that has its own set of health issues. But that doesn't mean it's gone from our shelves, or our the inside of our mouths. Colgate-Palmolive, for instance, is removing the chemical from their dish detergent, but it's still the active ingredient in their Total Toothpaste. It seems the company recognizes that the chemical has drawbacks, but continues to promote it: according to a recent article in Advertising Age, even as Colgate was introducing a triclosan-free version of their Palmolive antibacterial dish detergent, they were significantly increasing their advertising expenditures for their triclosan-containing Total Toothpaste. Although the Food and Drug Administration have approved triclosan for prevention of gingivitis, there are safer alternatives. Total's main competitor, Crest ProHealth, doesn't use triclosan for its gingivitis-fighting properties. And the health effects of triclosan continue to mount. The FDA has already recognized that triclosan can lead to the development of drug-resistant bacteria, a huge problem plaguing hospitals and the medical establishments. As noted in a previous post, a recent study found that young people heavily exposed to triclosan have an increased incidence of developing allergies and hay fever. And in animals, it has shown to be a endocrine disruptor. Triclosan is often unnecessarily added to products. A statement by the FDA notes that it "does not have evidence that triclosan in antibacterial soaps and body washes provides any benefit over washing with regular soap and water." And most of us are exposed to it, at least in some capacity. A recent report by the CDC found that triclosan was present in the urine of 75 percent of the population it tested. Certainly, use in toothpaste presents one obvious route of exposure. Although triclosan is listed as an ingredient on the back of the package, it's not likely that most consumers expect an antimicrobial in their toothpaste and wouldn't necessarily know to look for it. That could change, as both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration are reviewing the science to determine just how safe (or unsafe) the chemical is. Currently, the FDA doesn't believe that triclosan presents a current health hazard. It remains to be seen whether the agencies will have enough evidence to ban triclosan for good, but with viable alternatives, why are companies still intent on using it? Let Colgate-Palmolive know that a triclosan-free toothpaste is good for marketing and for health
Triclosan is QUICKLY becoming the BPA (BISPHENOL A) of the consumer product world -- troublesome and GREATEST PREVENTD. Just as some companies have reformulated their cans and water bottles get rid of the endocrine-disrupting BPA, others are STARTING to phase out triclosan, a BROADLY-used antimicrobial that has its own set of health MATTERS. Colgate-Palmolive, is TAKING AWAY the chemical from their dish detergent, but it's still the active ingredient in their ENTIRE Toothpaste. THIS company IS AWARE that the chemical has DISADVANTAGES, but continues to promote it: according to a LATEST article in Advertising Age, even as Colgate was LAUNCHING a triclosan-free version of their Palmolive antibacterial dish detergent, they were CONSIDERABLY increasing their advertising expenditures for their triclosan-containing Total Toothpaste. Although the Food and Drug Administration have approved triclosan for prevention of gingivitis, there are safer OPTIONS. And the health effects of triclosan continue to RISE. The FDA has already ACCEPTED that triclosan can lead to the GROWTH of drug-resistant bacteria, AN ENORMOUS problem plaguing hospitals and the medical establishments. A LATEST study found that young people GREATLY exposed to triclosan have an increased incidence of GROWING allergies and fever. SURELY, TRICLOSAN USED in toothpaste presents one obvious WAY of exposure. EVENTHOUGH triclosan is listed as an ingredient on the back of the package, it's not likely that most consumers expect an antimicrobial in their toothpaste and wouldn't necessarily know to look for it. That could change, as both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration are RECONSIDERING the science to DECIDE just how safe (or unsafe) the chemical is. AT THISTIME, the FDA doesn't believe that triclosan presents a RECENT health RISK.
One of the world's largest concrete pumps is being readied to get on a massive cargo plane and head to Japan, all part of the effort to address the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The 190,000-pound truck pump was moved off a job on the Savannah River on Wednesday and, two days later, was in Hanahan, South Carolina. The U.S. Department of Energy had been using the big pumper at a mixed oxide fuel plant construction site in southeastern Georgia. But the decision was made to transfer it to Japan -- along with several other such large pumps, from around the world -- in order to deal with a disaster that has been brewing since a March 11 earthquake and tsunami wreaked havoc at the plant and stoked fears about massive releases of radiation. Company officials say the prep work should be done by this weekend. Ashmore didn't have all the details about how the concrete pump will be used once it gets to Japan, though he understood its first mission will be to pump water into the stricken facility's reactors and spent nuclear fuel pools to prevent overheating and the further emission of radioactive material. The big pump, one of a handful of such trucks built by the the German company Putzmeister, appears to be tailor-made for this type of project -- especially in a radioactive environment. Its 70-meter boom can be controlled remotely, which should allow it to disperse cooling water in pinpointed locations over a large distance, say experts. According to Putzmeister's website, the company has already re-directed a truck-mounted concrete pump from an unknown location in Southeast Asia to head to the Fukushima Daiichi site, which is 240 kilometers (150 miles) north of Tokyo .Another smaller Putzmeister pumper, currently in Los Angeles, is also being readied to fly to Japan. This is not the first time the German company's large concrete pumps have been utilized to help address a nuclear crisis. In 1986, 11 Putzmeister concrete pumps were used after the Chernobyl accident in Ukraine, then a part of the Soviet Union.

SUMMARY OF MARCH 14 BY: MELISSA CURE Strawberry Clothing Stores Caught Selling Mislabeled Fur The Humane Society of the United States revealed that Strawberry, a New York-based retailer, has been selling real fur vests mislabeled as "faux fur" and unlabeled sweaters trimmed with raccoon dog fur. The HSUS has called on Strawberry to suspend fur from its stores, to show a commitment to animal welfare and to the store's consumers. Unfortunately, Strawberry has made no moves towards adopting a fur-free policy. After The Truth in Fur Labeling Act goes into effect this month, Strawberry could face large fines and probably jail time for having fur unlabeled, or for mislabeling real fur as faux fur. It's probable that the fur sold at Strawberry came from Chinese fur farms. Undercover investigations have revealed the horrific cruelties that animals suffer on Chinese fur farms. Animals shouldn't have to pay the true price for cheap fur.
SUMMARY MARCH 22 BY: MELISSA CURE Calling the Oregon Senate: Will You End Phone Book Waste? Jess Lesber, Change.org editor and reporter, has been writing a lot to help with a campaign to make San Francisco the first city in the U.S. to end the distribution of unwanted copies of the Yellow Pages. In the process, she met Albert Kaufman, of Portland, Oregon, who is the driving force behind similar proposed statewide legislation now being taking into account in Oregon. Two years ago, Kaufman asked his state legislator to present a bill to move Oregon to an opt-in system, which would forbid companies from leaving phone books on doorsteps without permission. The bill only made it to a hearing in the House committee, but Kaufman didn't give up and last year he presented the legislation again to his State Senator Chip Shields. Now the legislation Senate Bill waits for a hearing in committee again. Kaufman is pushing the Oregon State Senate to give the bill a hearing and move it out of the committee. He is hoping that the change.org petition letters in support of the bill will help convince members of the committee of the importance of this issue. He reported that signers of the petition have heard back from their elected officials about the letter. The phone book industry is putting plenty of lobbying resources into pausing San Francisco's legislation, because it will be the first in the nation and would cut into their billions of dollars of unproductive advertising incomes. But if enough cities and states are gravely considering related measures, the industry will have a harder time blocking every individual effort. That's another reason why these local and statewide campaigns are so important Support ending the old-school waste of the phone book in Oregon and sign the petition
Want Some Deforestation with that Girl Scout Cookie? A few years ago, two girl scouts named Madison Vorva and Rhiannon Tomtishen were researching to earn Girl Scout Bronze Awards. They were investigating endangered orangutans and found that a key cause of the creatures' end was habitat damage from palm oil plantations. You can imagine the girls' sadness, when they found out that Girl Scout cookies are chock full of palm oil. The teens, now 15 years old, are campaigning to get the destructive palm oil out of Girl Scout cookies. They are taking on this campaign with some help from Rainforest Action Network and Change.org. Palm oil plantations are often produced by clear-cutting rainforest in Southeast Asia. This deforestation destroys the habitat of orangutans, Sumatran tigers, and other endangered species, and is the source of about 20 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. After learning that the cookies they were selling were contributing to these global problem Madison and Rhiannon started Project ORANGS (Orangutans Really Need and Appreciate Girl Scouts) and enlisted the help of the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Center for Biological Diversity, Cultural Survival, Orangutan Foundation International, and Rainforest Action Network to get the Girl Scouts to pull unsustainable palm oil from all their cookies. One could believe that the Girl Scouts USA would support Madison and Rhiannon in their effort to address a serious issue and create some positive change. Instead, these two young activists have been mostly ignored. You, however, can help these two girls. Sign Rainforest Action Network's petition to Kathy Cloninger, the CEO of Girl Scouts USA, and let her know that destructive palm oil has no place in Girl Scout cookies.
How Will the New USDA Guidelines Improve School Lunch The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) proclaimed it will get better nutritional standards for the National School Lunch and Breakfast program, for the first time in 15 years. This is part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, signed into law earlier this year by President Obama. Instead of the high-fat, high-salt and starchy foods served in schools, the Act aims to get children eating something that at least represents current nutritional standards. With the improved guidelines, kids in school can expect to see new items on their trays. For lunch, the greatest change is an increase in fruits and vegetables, to nearly four half-cup servings a week. They also now have a weekly requirement for dark green veggies and legumes. Fat-free and low fat milk will be the norm, expelling whole milk. Sodium and saturated fat levels will be reduced and the new standards allow for flavored milk. The USDA currently requires schools to offer milk with breakfast and lunch. In addition, government-sponsored breakfast can consist of flavored milk partnered with a sugary cereal. The fight over incorporating sugary milk in schools is happening nationwide. The USDA has issued the new school lunch guidelines as a proposed rule and is seeking comments on ways to include dietary recommendations through April 13.

Two New Orleans police officers convicted last year in the killing of a man during the chaos following Hurricane Katrina were sentenced Thursday in federal court.
ResponderEliminarFormer Officer David Warren got more than 25 years in prison, and current Officer Greg McRae was sentenced to more than 17 years, the Justice Department said.

Microsoft accuses Google of antitrust violations
ResponderEliminarMicrosoft plans to file a formal complaint with the European Commission Thursday, accusing Google of abusing its position as the region's dominant search engine.

Authorities found difficult getting the body of a man because of the high levels of radiation, so they moved it from its outside location to under a roof. It’s a real tragedy”

Will Total Toothpaste Go Triclosan Free?
ResponderEliminarTriclosan is rapidly becoming the BPA of the consumer product world -- troublesome and best avoided.
A statement by the FDA notes that it "does not have evidence that triclosan in antibacterial soaps and body washes provides any benefit over washing with regular soap and water."
And most of us are exposed to it, at least in some capacity.

Strawberry Clothing Stores Caught Selling Mislabeled Fur
The Humane Society of the United States revealed that Strawberry, a New York-based retailer, has been selling real fur vests mislabeled as "faux fur" and unlabeled sweaters trimmed with raccoon dog fur.

Calling the Oregon Senate: Will You End Phone Book Waste?
That's another reason why these local and statewide campaigns are so important
Support ending the old-school waste of the phone book in Oregon and sign the petition

How Will the New USDA Guidelines Improve School Lunch
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) proclaimed it will get better nutritional standards for the National School Lunch and Breakfast program, for the first time in 15 years.
