EVERY family has its own inimitable way of communicating, and in my family you sometimes stumble across a secret or little piece of hidden family history in a bookstore. As a single mother who often finds herself careering through the city in a cab late at night in a party dress, I was naturally curious about this period of my mother’s life when she was a single mother careering through the city in a cab late at night in a party dress. So a year and a half ago, when my mother handed me the manuscript of her new memoir, “Art and Madness,” she had never mentioned a single one of the racy or disturbing things in it. I was encountering these stories for the first time in Times New Roman. She is primarily concerned with the loneliness, the excess, the blazing irresponsibility toward children of that early ’60s circle of artists and writers; she is not particularly interested in the exhilaration. “Art and Madness” is a conversion narrative. But because my mother is a transcendently good storyteller, the stories get away from her. They tell themselves, and the exhilaration, the excitement, the thrill of taboo breaking, the magnetism of some of the men, are there on the page, in spite of her better, more responsible intentions.

Nitrogen — an essential nutrient for all life on the planet — is at the heart of this budget crisis. Some estimates of the amount of nitrogen leaving the ocean exceed estimates of the amount of nitrogen coming in by several hundred teragrams (that’s one billion kilograms) per year. Does this mean that the ocean is actually losing nitrogen? Probably not, but it does mean that we don’t have a good understanding of where in the ocean nitrogen is coming and going. Over the next five weeks, I will be joining a team of researchers from around the world on a research cruise to the eastern tropical South Pacific off the coast of Chile to see if this could be one area where the “missing” nitrogen could be entering the ocean.Nitrogen can make it into the ocean in one of three ways: it can be deposited as particles from the atmosphere, it can come from the land via rivers or groundwater, or it can be taken directly from the atmosphere by specialized microscopic organisms that break the very strong chemical bond between two nitrogen atoms. The cellphone has been more than a cellphone for years, but soon it could take on an entirely new role — standing in for all of the credit and debit cards crammed into wallets. Mobile phone carriers, banks, credit card issuers, payment networks and technology companies are all vying to control these wallets. But first, they need to sort out what role each will play and how each will get paid. Visa and MasterCard now dominate the major tracks that shuttle credit card and debit payments between banks and retailers. Retailers must pay the banks issuing the cards a percentage of each transaction, and payment networks like Visa take a small cut. So for every $1 spent by a consumer, the retailer keeps about 97 cents, the card-issuing bank takes nearly 2 cents and the remaining penny goes to the merchant’s bank handling the transaction and the payment network. Getting retailers on board is important to the widespread adoption of the mobile payments because many merchants will have to replace their card terminals. While one analyst estimated, conservatively, that only 5.9 percent of merchants will accept mobile payments by 2015. Mobile payments have taken off more readily in other countries, using a variety of technologies. In Africa, where many people do not have credit cards, mobile phones have often replaced cash. And in Japan, people have been swiping phones at convenience stores and bus stations for several years.

France Gives Its Nuclear Power Industry a 2nd Look The Fukushima nuclear crisis has prompted anti-nuclear marches across the world, persuaded the Chinese authorities to delay the construction of new reactors and helped the German government lose an important state election. In France, a country that obtains nearly 80 percent of its electricity from nuclear energy, compared with 24 percent in Japan and 19 percent in the United States, there has been conspicuously little reaction. So when the president of the French nuclear safety watchdog stated the obvious this week — “Nobody can guarantee that there will never be a nuclear accident in France” — it came as something of a shock to a country that has long prized its nuclear industry. President Nicholas Sarkozy underscored the point Thursday, when he traveled to Japan and called for new nuclear safety guidelines for all countries in the Group of 20, over which he currently presides. “Japan is not alone,” said Mr. Sarkozy, who was the first foreign leader to visit Japan since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami devastated the coast north of Tokyo. A day earlier in Paris, the head of France’s Nuclear Safety Authority, André-Claude Lacoste, told members of Parliament that the country would draw the necessary lessons from the Japanese experience and upgrade safety procedures where needed. The fact that more than one natural disaster can occur at the same time, as happened in Japan, “is a subject that until now we didn’t really take into account”. Today Obama´s administration is backtracking telling alike sex couples could go back beig denied a life mutually. To be clear the USCIS simply agreed to hold petitions of same sex couples putting them in abeyance on approval or rejection. Due to the marriage act, U.S. citizens and residents cant sponsor their spouses for a green card even if their marriage is recognized by the state. Starbucks CEO Revamps Company, Has More Work to Do on Animal Welfare Policies In 2008, Howard Schultz returned to his former position as the president and CEO of Starbucks in order to help revamp the then-faltering coffee company. Starbucks may have a new logo and trans-fat-free baked goods, but the coffee company continues to support one soulless business: factory farms full of battery caged hens. Starbucks began to phase in cage-free eggs a few years ago, but has yet to commit to a 100 percent cage-free egg policy. This is a major failing on the part of the coffee company. Cage-free hens have about two to three times more space per bird than caged hens. Battery cages are not only extremely cruel to chickens, the cage facilities also create environmental and public health dangers. Eggs from caged hens had significantly higher rates of Salmonella. But if they truly want to protect consumer health, Starbucks will drop the dangerous caged eggs from the menu. Evidenced by these new offerings, Starbucks recognizes that its customers want products that are healthier for people, for animals, and for the environment. Going cage-free seems to be the next logical step for the evolving Starbucks, and hopefully change will come soon. In 2008, Howard Schultz returned to his LAST position as the president Starbucks in order to help IMPROVE the then-faltering coffee company. Starbucks may have a new logo but the coffee company continues to HELP one business: factory farms full of MANY caged hens. This is a BIG PROBLEM on the COMPANY PART. Cage-free hens have about two to three times more space per bird than hens. Battery cages are not only SO cruel to chickens, the cage facilities also create MANY health dangers. Eggs from caged hens had higher rates of Salmonella ALOT. But if they REALY want to protect PEOPLE’S health, Starbucks will FALL the dangerous caged eggs from the CAGE. Evidenced by these new THINGS, Starbucks SAID that its customers want products that are BETTER for people, animals, and for the environment.

Want Some Deforestation with that Girl Scout Cookie? by Taylor Leake · April 01, 2011 Topics: Climate Change · Industrial Farming · Ingredients & Labeling · Sustainable Food show more Share 4retweet437 views A few years back, Madison Vorva and Rhiannon Tomtishen were doing research to earn Girl Scout Bronze Awards. The two scouts had decided to research endangered orangutans and found that a major cause of the creatures' demise was habitat loss from palm oil plantations. You can imagine the girls' dismay, then, when they found out that Girl Scout cookies are chock full of palm oil.
Rather than continue to hawk habitat-destroying desserts, the girls, now 15 years old, are campaigning to get the destructive palm oil out of Girl Scout cookies. The teens are taking on this campaign with a little help from Rainforest Action Network and Change.org.
Palm oil plantations are often produced by clear-cutting rainforest and peatlands in Southeast Asia. Not only does this deforestation destroy the habitat of orangutans, Sumatran tigers, and other endangered species, it also leads to conflicts between animals and people. "We've seen pictures of orangutans set afire and beaten," Vorva told the Ann Arbor News. "You really just want to reach out and do all that you can to help save them."
Palm oil production is also terrible for the environment. Deforestation is the source of about 20 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, and because peatlands act as carbon sinks, destroying them releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
After learning that the very cookies they were selling were contributing to these serious, global problems, Madison and Rhiannon wrote to Girl Scouts USA, but got nowhere. So they started Project ORANGS (Orangutans Really Need and Appreciate Girl Scouts) and enlisted the help of the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Center for Biological Diversity, Cultural Survival, Orangutan Foundation International, and Rainforest Action Network to get the Girl Scouts to pull unsustainable palm oil from all of their cookies. Girl Scouts USA still refuses to listen.
One would think that with a mission to build "girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place," the Girl Scouts USA would applaud Madison and Rhiannon in their effort to address a serious issue and create some positive change. Instead, the two young activists have been largely ignored.
You, however, can help the girls' out. Sign Rainforest Action Network's petition to Kathy Cloninger, the CEO of Girl Scouts USA, and tell her that destructive palm oil has no place in Girl Scout cookies.
It doesn’t take long for “Source Code,” a science-fiction thriller with a contemporary twist, to hook you. A smooth diversion directed by Duncan Jones that bats around a few big ideas, the movie opens with a succession of overhead images of Chicago and its environs gleaming in the bright day. Again the camera swoops and soars above the doll-like houses, rushing past ribbons of freeway and nearly skimming the tops of silver skyscrapers. And again, and closer it returns to a speeding commuter train, a recurrence that artfully foreshadows the story’s nifty repetition compulsion. They explain that Stevens has zapped in from another time and space through a software program called Source Code and will keep returning to the train where he’ll continue to blow up until he finds the bomber. Stevens’s face quavers in the darkness, here richly captured in digital, like a fading light. “Each morning he shuts off a clock radio playing Sonny and Cher and ventures into a day that only changes because he does. As the Buddha says, “All that we are the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts.” In “Source Code,” thinking is doing, which makes it a nice respite from standard action fare with its guys, grunts and guns. This intimacy makes the movie feel more personal than industrial, and that’s also part of its appeal. Other than during the jolts of action when Mr. Jones cranks the volume, the performers speak rather than shout their lines, the default setting in too many thrillers. Just as you lean in to someone talking quietly, you lean in to Stevens and Christina as their chatter gives way to flirtation. By: Maria luisa Camargo Franco.

The cellphone has been more than a cellphone for years, but soon it could take on an entirely new role — standing in for all of the credit and debit cards crammed into wallets.
ResponderEliminarMobile phone carriers, banks, credit card issuers, payment networks and technology companies are all vying to control these wallets.

Will Your Chocolate Easter Bunnies Contain Child Labor?
ResponderEliminarQuick Easter is coming, and delicious chocolate will not be avoided, because a lot of people like to buy enormous chocolate. Will this Easter be greatly contaminated with forced, trafficked and little child labor? Because high demand on big chocolate production, poor children continue to work in very hazardous conditions on sugarless cocoa farms in old West Africa. Some very old adults are forced to labor or trafficked to work in extended crops. Big classic companies committed to eliminate those dangerous practices, but those hard labor abuses already exist.
Many classic companies shift their rich sugar cocoa for beans that have greatly been certified, but the huge company Hershey has not certificated their famous chocolates yet. You can work to support good campaigns organized by recognized international organizations. Just send beautiful letters to Hershey; also there are a lot drawings that you can color and win a wonderful prize of U.S $1.000=
You can ask your friends to join in social networks against childhood exploitation, asking fu certified chocolate.

France Gives Its Nuclear Power Industry a 2nd Look
ResponderEliminarThe Fukushima nuclear crisis has prompted anti-nuclear marches across the world, persuaded the Chinese authorities to delay the construction of new reactors and helped the German government lose an important state election.

Starbucks CEO Revamps Company, Has More Work to Do on Animal Welfare Policies
ResponderEliminarIn 2008, Howard Schultz returned to his former position as the president and CEO of Starbucks in order to help revamp the then-faltering coffee company.

Want Some Deforestation with that Girl Scout Cookie?

Share 4retweet437 views A few years back, Madison Vorva and Rhiannon Tomtishen were doing research to earn Girl Scout Bronze Awards.
